Jones continues U.S. service

RESERVE — George Ellis Jones has been a resident at Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home for over six months.
Jones, 80, was born in New Orleans and joined the U.S. Air Force after completing a GED program in 1951.
He was stationed at Castle Air Force base in California, serving in the B-52 squadron. He also served in North Africa and Taiwan before retiring on Sept. 1, 1971, after serving 20 years and one day.
Jones is the president of the Buffalo Soldiers Organization and is a member of the Shriners Platta Temple 15 in New Orleans. He is a member of the National Order of the Trench Rats, where he serves on the imperial council.
Jones is a lifetime aide to Gen. James A. Huningston, and many citations were awarded to him, including the Presidential Citation.
He has routinely participated in the living history of the Battle of New Orleans Free Men of Color at the Chalmette Battlefield.
He was employed by the National Park Service in 1983 and retired in 1996. Jones is a member of the United Houma Nation.
He donated all of the military service flags, which are on display at Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home.
He and his first wife Phylis Neron had three children: George Mark, Kandy and Nikki.
After Phylis’ death, he married Victoria Rock, who is also deceased.
He is one of many residents at the Veterans Home, which is a treasure trove of military history.
The home is always looking for volunteers to help in various roles from activities, room visits and talent shows.
