One of the most influential men I’ve ever met in my life is Mr. Glenn Dyer, the basketball coach at Bonnabel High School. I spoke at the school occasionally and met Coach Dyer 20 years ago. I’ve always respected him as a coach, attended a few of the basketball games, and admired his demeanor during the ball games.

He has been the coach at Bonnabel for 41 years and has won over 800 games. One hundred of those games were won in the last four years.

He reached the State Tournament in 1992 and 2007. In fact, his team has gone to the State Tournament three of the last four years and for the second time, played in the finals this year, losing to Alexandria High School 37-36. Two of his top rebounders, a 6-foot-8-inch junior and a 6-foot-6-inch senior had to sit out in the second quarter with two fouls each.

Forty-one years as a successful teacher and basketball coach who has never won the State Title, when asked after the game for a statement said, “We’ll do it again.” That’s right! Coach Dyer is looking forward to his 42nd year at Bonnabel High School.

Over the years, he has coached many young men with the dream of winning a championship and getting a ring.

As some of his ex-players look back, I’m sure they will realize he gave them more than just basketball.

Coach Glenn Dyer showed his players what commitment to a job meant and did it with class. He is one of the most successful coaches in high school athletics in my lifetime.
