LAPLACE — Officer elections for the newly reactivated St. John the Baptist Parish chapter of the NAACP have been rescheduled to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Central Branch Library on U.S. 51 in LaPlace.
The NAACP has a mission to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well being of all persons.
The organization’s history in St. John Parish traces back decades. Edward Hall established the NAACP branch in Reserve, and his name appeared on a 1944 lawsuit in response to roadblocks at the local Registrar of Voters. With help from Thurgood Marshall, the suit entered the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal and paved the way for African American voting rights.
Shondrell Perrilloux of LaPlace is re-activating the chapter. For more information, call 504-232-0966.
