I’m sure you’ve heard people say that America is not what it used to be. Every generation believes that the generation following theirs is going to the dogs or will ruin this country.

A Wall Street Journal NBC News poll of 1,000 adults last year lends credence to that way of thinking. It showed that people born in the early to mid-1960s to the early 1980s found that younger generations rate patriotism, religion, and having children as less important than did young people two decades prior.

A poll taken 20 years earlier reflected the values of adults at that time. They viewed hard work, patriotism, commitment to religion and the goal of having children as most important to them.

I’m reminded of what my daughter Ronny told me years ago. She said that what one generation allows in moderation, the next will abuse in excess.

The World War II generation, which is called “The Greatest Generation,” gave so much so that their children and grandchildren might enjoy the blessings of liberty, but the current generation seems cool to what once seemed to matter most.

With more money than previous generations and the possessions of many material things, we’ve become selfish. Personal satisfaction and achievement lead to a decline of one’s need for God. People now have too much money and little purpose.

The secular world has affected what’s important to the point that people can believe whatever they want – or nothing at all.

Today, young people are exposed to the media that does not promote patriotism, belief in God or values, which previous generations did not take for granted and instilled in their children.

The question is: Can America survive when our moral, spiritual, and patriotic foundations are destroyed?
