Destrehan finishes season as 5A State rummer-up

DESTREHAN – The Destrehan Wildcats had a 4-3 record after seven weeks of the 2019 regular season with losses to St. James, Terrebonne and East St. John. Coach Stephen Robicheaux and the Wildcats were able to turn the season around by winning the last three games of the season, which included a 23-21 victory over cross-river rival Hahnville.
After a tough schedule, the Wildcats moved up to the No. 7 seed in the Class 5A State Playoffs. Destrehan found their groove in the playoffs with a solid running game and outstanding defense.
The Wildcats advanced past Ponchatoula 48 – 3 and Covington 17 – 7 in the early rounds and defeated West Monroe 20 – 17 in a thrilling home game in the Quarterfinals. Destrehan defeated Haughton 27 – 17 in the semifinals to advance to the State Championship game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The Wildcats would come up short as the Acadiana Rams won 8-3 in the Championship Game. Destrehan fought hard and never gave up in a defensive battle. Destrehan finished the season 11 – 4 after turning around the season.
Running back Kyle Edwards was a standout throughout the regular season and the playoffs. The Alabama commit finished the season with over 1,000 yards rushing for the season.
