Keller: Christmas should remind us of our greatest hope

Monday morning at coffee, my friend Wade Delaneuville said that the Christmas season is one of the saddest times of the year for many people. I was taken back many years ago when one of the most influential people in my life, Sr. Mary Evangelist, my seventh-grade teacher, shared the same thing. I remember her saying that with all the merriment, gift-giving, family get-togethers, and songs about Joy to the World and Peace on Earth, many people have no hope.

As I’ve gotten older, I realize that now more than ever. This past weekend, I attended a function at One Hope Church in New Orleans. My granddaughter Amber and her husband, Pastor Josh Canizaro, started the church five years ago. The message was the same but stressed that as Christians we have hope and peace that only a relationship with Jesus can give. Psalm 31:24 reads “Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord.” Proverbs 23:18, “For surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off.”

This assures us of what Christians can look forward to. What a great time for someone who doesn’t know Jesus to make a decision to accept Him as Savior and have the hope that only He gives.
