Olga brings unexpected impact

LAPLACE — Tropical Storm Olga took River Parishes residents by surprise over the weekend with howling 39 mph gusts, fallen debris, frequent lightning and street flooding. St. John the Baptist Parish officials worked overnight Friday to respond to calls and monitor weather conditions.
Between midnight and 8 a.m. Saturday morning, rainfall totaled 3 inches in Reserve and 2 inches in LaPlace. From Friday morning to Saturday morning, Garyville saw close to six inches of rain. Street flooding was reported to 911 in Homewood, Maple Loop, Woodland Drive and Toni Drive.
Approximately 3,600 residents were left without power due to transformer issues that impacted River Forest, Woodland Quarters, Riverlands, Old Highway 51, parts of Cambridge and portions of Edgard.
