LAPLACE — At 10 p.m. tomorrow, August 1, HGTV is unveiling a new home renovation show with a family connection to St. John the Baptist Parish.

After welcoming their first baby, husband and wife duo Jon Pierre and Mary Tjon-Joe-Pin embarked on a new journey of transforming aging properties in Houston into affordable homes with bold colors and functional design.

Mary and Jon, the stars of “Going for Sold,” are the daughter and son-in-law of St. John the Baptist Parish Chief Administrative Officer LaVerne Toombs.

Toombs took a flight to Texas earlier this week to be beside her family for the premiere.

“Who would ever imagine your daughter would have such a passion where it’s displayed for the world to see?” Toombs said. “I am truly a proud mom, mother-in-law and grandmother.”

Starting Thursday, “Going for Sold” will air weekly, 30-minute episodes following Jon and Mary’s takeover of older houses built in the 1950s to the 1980s.

“Going for Sold” premieres at 10 p.m. Thursday, August 1.

Throughout the season, they will face a number of structural challenges to give new life to older constructions, including transforming a two bedroom house into a three bedroom house, reconfiguring kitchens, moving an outdoor utility room indoors and maximizing closet space.

The show is two years in the making, and it was a surprise even to Jon and Mary. They were scouted through social media after posting videos about their journey.

Prior to starting a family, Jon worked in the oil industry, and Mary was often miles from home in her career as a flight attendant.

“We’d just had our first baby, so we were just looking for ways to stay more connected as a family,” Jon said. “We were trying to find something that was a passion that we could enjoy and do for the rest of our lives. We got into real estate. We watched a lot of HGTV, and that motivated us to see if we could do the same type of thing.”

In the past few years, Jon and Mary have worked on 20 projects together and have welcomed a second child.

Their children, 4-year-old Harper and little Grayson, almost 2, will make cameos on the new TV show. However, their parents have been careful to make sure filming disrupted their lives as little as possible.

“It’s never been about trying to get a show or be something that we’re not,” Jon said. “I think what makes us unique and what hopefully makes our show unique is that you really get a true sense of who we are. What you see on TV is who we are in real life, and that’s easy for people to relate to.”

Mary, originally from Slidell, said the experience has been a dream come true.

“It was something that was unexpected. I’ve learned to appreciate surprises, and this was one of the best surprises for sure,” Mary said.

It was a huge transition from being away from home four to five days a week to working with her spouse, but she said it has been a rewarding change.

“You have to find a new normal, especially when working with your spouse and drawing the lines between the business and the personal,” Mary said. “I think we’ve found a really great, happy medium.”

The couple encourages the public to tune in and welcomes design questions on social media.

When they aren’t filming in Texas, Mary loves returning home to Louisiana to visit her mother in St. John Parish.

“We come back quite often, and we definitely have to keep ourselves in check when it comes to the food,” Mary said with a laugh. “There’s just no place like Louisiana.”

Jon jokes that even though he’s from Houston, he turns into a Saints fan when he crosses the state line.
