SPORTSMAN’S BRIEF: Apple snails are multiplying in Manchac, and researchers warn the pink eggs carry a toxin that could cause serious health issues if touched. Eggs are coated in a slime-like substance and carry a harmful parasite called rat lungworm.

It is against the law to collect live apple snails, but it is legal to kill them by crushing the shells and eggs and knocking them into the water.

Check all boats and trailers for any eggs to avoid transferring them to other waterways.

In other outdoor news, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reminds local fishermen and women that 2018-2019 recreational fishing licenses expire on June 30. Licenses for the 2019-2020 seasons are available for purchase now through June 30.
