Shumaker: Make fall plans for college

With another graduation behind us, we look ahead to the upcoming Summer session. Classes began on Tuesday, May 28 for the Summer session, and registration is currently open for the Fall Semester beginning in August.

While many students wait until the week before classes begin to register, there are valid reasons not to wait until the last minute.

In order for classes to be considered, they must have a minimum number of students. A few weeks before the semester is scheduled to begin, if classes do not seem to be “making it” they are cancelled.

Instructors must be moved into other classes and slots where they are needed to make the minimum number required. If more students registered earlier in the summer for fall, additional classes could be made available.

There are literally hundreds of classes; each one must have enough students to remain on the final schedule.

The process is simple. It requires the potential student go to the website and register.

Then, bring to the campus of choice, any paperwork such as previous transcripts and/or test scores such as ACT.

Having a current ACT is not required for admissions.

River Parishes Community College is an open admissions college.

The Student Services Staff will be happy to advise on how to proceed to scheduling classes.

There are Financial Aid Counselors at each campus to assist with scholarships, grants or other types of financial aid you may be interested in applying.

You can then go about enjoying the rest of your summer knowing that, come August, you will be ready to attend your first class.

The process may seem daunting, but there are Student Services Staff ready and willing to assist you with each step of the process.

Come out to the Reserve Campus, Mondays through Thursdays, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and see what opportunities are available to you.
