LAPLACE — St. John Government officials want parish residents to see how travel between here, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and beyond could be enhanced with a LaPlace stop on a regional multi-modal transportation operation.

Officials will unveil the plan through a public presentation at 10 am Friday at the Edmond “Skipper” Songy Service Center, 102 E. Airline Hwy in LaPlace.

In addition to conceptualizing a commuter-rail station that ties in the future New Orleans – Baton Rouge passenger rail station, the project also identifies opportunities to spur economic development in the area along Main Street in LaPlace.

This includes a train station, commercial/residential units, retail space and space for public meetings, rentals and other civic uses.

The event is free and open to the public.

Parish President Natalie Robottom’s office said St. John was awarded grant funds to study the station area location, develop a land use plan and forecast the impacts of the resulting economic development and traffic changes.

St. John selected the AECOM consultant team to help gather data, meeting with stakeholders, talk to the public and develop alternatives for consideration.
