EDGARD — Senior outside hitter Amiya Lumar has been a force on the West St. John volleyball team for years, according to head coach Tahajenik Melancon.

Lumar played her final volleyball game Oct. 30, when the No. 25 seed Lady Rams fell 0-3 to No. 8 seed St. Martin’s Episcopal in the first round of the playoffs.

The girls put up a good fight and scored 38 points despite the loss, ending with scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 15-8.

With a 9-13 season record, the Lady Rams held their own on the court this year.

Melancon did not respond to requests for comment as of press time Tuesday morning but told L’OBSERVATEUR last month the Lady Rams stood out in their “aggressiveness and ability to kill whatever is on the net” this season.

East St. John High

The East St. John volleyball team’s two wins this season came against South Plaquemines at the very beginning and near the end of the season.

The middle trek was a long and challenging road for the Lady Cats, who finished the 2018 season 2-12 among a competitive district schedule.

Through the losses, head coach Halle Gayten saw the girls could bring a fighting spirit with the right attitude.

With many returning players, the Lady Cats will have a chance to rewrite the story next year.
