ST. JAMES – The community is shaken after a shooting at a basketball game at St. James High School last night.
The shooting took place in the parking lot of the gymnasium moments after the conclusion of a basketball game between parish rivals St. James High School and Lutcher High School.
As spectators were leaving the game a subject opened fire, striking one individual. Cowan Franklin, 19, from Lutcher was shot multiple times and was transported by Acadian Air-Med to University Hospital in New Orleans where he is in stable condition.
Klyin Elder, 17, 9361 Water Tower St. in Convent, was arrested and charged.
Elder was charged with attempted second-degree murder, possession of a firearm on school property and illegal use of a dangerous weapon.
Elder is currently being held at the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office Jail awaiting bond.
The shooting is reportedly the result of an argument that occurred earlier in the day involving Elder and Franklin.
Detectives are continuing their investigation of this incident.
