Michel: Slowing down is best way for order

Of the inventions I’ve seen in my lifetime, (wheeled luggage, computers, K cups, cell phones, remote controls…) not far from the top of the list of those I most appreciate is aerosol sunscreen.

The amount of time devoted to the important step of applying sunscreen to my grandchildren has been greatly decreased with this improvement. Now they just stand still and let me spray.

However, for applying protection to their faces I use sunscreen in a stick. It’s better than lotion, but still not as convenient as a spray.

The application of sunscreen to the faces of my grandchildren requires them to face me, remain motionless and close their eyes and mouths — which is not their default setting.

Maybe they don’t realize that I’m just trying to help them. Only when the squirming around and talking stops can I cover their faces with sunscreen.

On, how I can relate! It’s often difficult for me to be still.

When I sit to pray and read the Bible, I’m often restless.

I check my calendar for the day’s agenda, look up a scripture on my phone and wind up scrolling through Instagram.

Almost every time I get sidetracked, the words from Psalm 46:10 weave their way through my thoughts. “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Every time I think of those words, I stop what I’m doing, look up, and praise the One Who sits above the details of my day. And in that stillness of my soul, I’m filled with peace.

Taking a few moments each morning to mediate on the goodness of God somehow brings order to my day and gives me a heavenly perspective.
