CHACKBAY — Two River Region residents were killed during a violent two-vehicle crash Sunday night in Lafourche Parish that also resulted in the arrest of one of the drivers for D.W.I.
The wreck occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday on Louisiana 20 near Farmer Lane in Chackbay, according to Trooper Jesse LaGrange.
Raini Scioneaux, 22, of Gramercy and 23-year-old Brennan Clement of Vacherie were killed as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, Louisiana State Police said.
The preliminary investigation revealed Scioneaux was traveling south on Louisiana 20 when her Nissan Sentra, which also contained Clement, ran off of the roadway to the right. Police believe Scioneaux overcorrected to the left in an attempt to regain control, crossing the center line, where her vehicle struck a Lexus G46 traveling northbound on Louisiana 20.
George Popov, 49, of Baton Rouge was driving the Lexus with 17-year-old Aleksander Popov in the vehicle, as well.
Scioneaux and Clement were not wearing their seat belts, according to Louisiana State Police, and suffered fatal injuries. The Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced them deceased on the scene.
George Popov was properly restrained and not injured. The younger Popov was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.
Authorities said impairment is unknown on the part of Scioneaux and a standard toxicology report is pending through the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.
“(George) Popov was found to be impaired, and he was placed under arrest,” LaGrange said in a release. “He refused the breath test and a search warrant was obtained for a blood sample. The results are pending through the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Popov was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center for second offense driving while intoxicated.”
