Parish Council District 6
- Tonia Schnyder
Date of Birth: 01/29/1969
Profession/Current Employer/Retired: Retired
Why did you choose to run for Parish Council?
I have always been a public servant. I chose to run for Parish Council because I wanted to make a difference in my community. I want to advocate for those who feel they don’t have a voice. I would like to help our residents regain that trust and faith in our leaders. I want to help St. John parish be a place our residents are proud to call home. I believe I have the capability, the passion, and the drive to help move our parish forward.
What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position?
My background in accounting, working in the Oil and chemical industry for 22 years, being a Pro Board-certified Industrial firefighter for 17 years, a business owner, and the extensive training and experience I’ve received while serving as Councilwoman of St. John the Baptist parish council for the past 4 years, make me the most qualified candidate for this position. While serving on St. John the Baptist parish council, I’ve received several certifications, including Center for Local Government Excellence, First Responder Pipeline Training, Trust-Based Relational Intervention training, and completion of the St. John Parish Citizen’s Academy.
What is the No. 1 concern impacting your district, and how do you plan to address this?
The number 1 concern impacting my district is drainage. Dredging the canals in my district made a huge difference, however, there are still several areas of concern with heavy rain. I will work with Public Works and identify these areas. Together, develop a strategic plan to have all drains inspected and cleaned. Also, implement a preventive maintenance schedule to prevent future issues from developing.
What would you like to accomplish in the next four years?
My first task is to develop a stronger relationship with my fellow council members and the parish’s administration. I believe we are stronger and can accomplish much more with unity. Economic development is also a top priority. We need new businesses that are feasible for our residents. I would like to focus on updating and adding ordinances that will help the livelihood of our residents. I would like to work with my residents and develop a beautification plan that will enhance all areas of District 6. I would also like to gain the support of the district 6 residents and Parish council in the renaming of the Cambridge Park in the near future. I will continue serving my residents with integrity, transparency, and accountability. I will continue to promote Unity in my Community.
