GARYVILLE — As of Sunday, August 27, much of the fire has been extinguished at the Marathon Petroleum Garyville refinery. Firefighters continue to address small spot fires.
“Our main priority remains the safety of those on-site, our neighbors, first responders and to limit environmental impact,” a company spokesperson said.
Air monitoring continues and no off-site impacts have been detected. In addition to Marathon’s air monitoring efforts, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, and a third-party contractor are conducting independent air monitoring in the community. A plan is being developed and evaluated to return the refinery to normal operations, when appropriate.
Marathon Petroleum’s response efforts have been supported by St. John the Baptist Parish and five industrial companies. Twelve others contributed firefighting equipment.
Marathon set up a community assistance hotline to help members of the community impacted by the incident. The toll-free number is (866) 601-5880.
An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.
