Local business owner Michelle Sweeney has dedicated the past 25 years to serving the community as a notary public. She is now announcing her candidacy for Louisiana House of Representatives District 57 with a vision to unite the River Parishes as a destination where families, friends and neighbors can thrive for generations to come.

As a conservative Democrat, Sweeney plans to elevate the River Parishes by proposing legislation focused on education, infrastructure and business development.

On the education front, Sweeney’s platform involves improving security features at all school sites. This includes implementing single-point entries, metal detectors, and other security measures that are already utilized in courts and parish government buildings.

Sweeney plans to help students transition into sustainable careers by making trade credits available in all high schools. Students will be able to obtain certifications in trades including but not limited to hotels and tourism, truck driving, retail management, culinary arts, and welding, with opportunities to pursue internships after graduation and during summer breaks. Credits could be applied toward obtaining certifications through local vo-tech institutions. Sweeney would also like to see art and English classes resume teaching cursive to ensure every student has a signature before graduation. This can be achieved by inviting artists or notary publics into schools to teach a one-day class, just as Sweeney has done for local students.

Sweeney believes in rewarding school achievement by offering bonuses to principals based on criteria such as school safety, LEAP test scores, student GPAs, and, most importantly, graduation rates.

“The children are our future,” Sweeney said. “We need more charter schools or better schools statewide!”

Sweeney also aims to provide free Internet for farming communities and impoverished areas, ensuring all have access to a wealth of online resources.

A commitment to development, growth and sustainability should be reflected across the River Region. According to Sweeney, all of the River Parishes have significant room to grow in attracting businesses to keep families from venturing toward New Orleans for dining and entertainment. Sweeney said, “We want our parishes to prosper and grow.”

Sweeney intends to bring large destination businesses to District 57 to attract tourism while providing more jobs and entertainment for constituents. She added that finishing the levee and pumping stations in a timely manner will be key to growth and success, offering a sense of safety and stability to communities that have been impacted by flooding.

“We want to make the River Parishes a destination to visit and to move to,” she said.

Sweeney has served as CEO of Michelle L. Sweeney L.L.C. & Louisiana Civil Law Notary Public since 1999. As a Lifetime Commissioned Civil Law Notary Public and a National Notary Association Certified Mortgage Signing Agent, she has committed to keeping services affordable and accessible to the public by offering $10 seals.

While Sweeney is now working full time to garner support to serve the River Parishes as your next State Representative for District 57, she remains available to serve the community with mobile notary services.

“I am listening to your voices and helping the community in any way that I can, hoping you’ll trust me to be your next state representative for the River Parishes as your Louisiana House of Representatives voice for District 57,” Sweeney said. “YOUR voice is MY voice. YOUR concerns are MY concerns. Help me to help all of us.”

Michelle Sweeney will host a Campaign Kick-off Gala from 6 to 8:30 p.m. this Thursday, August 17 at Belle Terre Country Club, located at 111 Fairway Drive in LaPlace. The cost at the door is $25 per person, and complimentary food will be provided. All candidates along with the public are invited to attend the gala, which will also pay tribute to outgoing District 57 Representative Randal Gaines and give the community an opportunity to meet Dixie Ramirez, candidate for St. John the Baptist Parish Council District Seven.
