LAPLACE — Camp Grant Walker has been accepting youth from across the state for more than 100 years. This summer, 11 St. John Parish 4-H members attended 4-H Summer Camp at Camp Grant Walker, adding to the long tradition of campers attending camp there.

Xavier Bell, St. John 4-H Agent, said, “4-H Camp is a place where youth grow from the time they board the bus to head to camp to the time they arrive back to their parents.” 4-H values its programs on life skill development. While at camp, campers learn how to be independent, care for others and the environment, and develop character.

While at 4-H Camp, campers selected an educational track that provided hands-on activities to learn about various outdoor survival skills. Some tracks included Water Safety, where they learned how to paddle board and be safe around the water; Artist Within, where they could express themselves through theatre and art; Outdoor Adventures, where they learned how to survive in the wilderness; and more.

During the afternoon, campers were placed in groups and rotated through a series of recreation stations that included swimming at the pool, canoeing/kayaking, archery, line dancing, sports, and arts & crafts, and the nighttime free time activities included a dance, movies, and sports.

4-H Camp is a place where memories are gained, said Bell and he is looking forward to having more youth from St. John Parish have the Camp Grant Walker camping experience.
