EDGARD – Officials at West St. John High School are gearing up to host the school’s inaugural crawfish cook-off this weekend. The fundraiser is sponsored by the River Parishes Tourist Commission.
The event – set for Saturday, June 17 – will benefit the WSJH Athletics Department and be held on the school’s lawn from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The school is located at 480 LA 3127 in Edgard.
The event will feature several categories of competition. Participants can boil crawfish, boil turkey necks, or cook any crawfish dish. There will be people’s choice winners, as well as winners determined by a panel of judges.
Entry into the boiled crawfish portion of the competition is $50 per team or individual, while entry into the seafood boiled turkey necks category is $35. Cooking up a crawfish dish for judging is $25 per entry. All entries must be received by June 15.
Entrants into the boiled crawfish contest should be prepared to cook a minimum of 100 pounds of crawfish, while entrants into the turkey neck competition should be prepared to cook two cases. Anyone preparing a crawfish dish should make enough to feed 125 people.
Organizers said the event will feature a water slide, bounce house, raffles, and DJ. Vendor spots, as well as sponsorship opportunities, are available.
Attendance is free, and for $20 patrons can purchase four food tickets to be used at any booth. An all-you-can eat wristband will be $60.
A meeting for participants will be held on June 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the WSJH gym.
