GARYVILLE—St. John the Baptist Parish Superintendent Rebecca Johnson issued a letter to parents this afternoon regarding an incident that occurred at the Garyville/Mt. Airy Math and Science Magnet School campus. According to the statement, at approximately 1:14 p.m. today, May 19, a threat was detected on the campus. The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office was immediately notified, with the campus placed under a lockdown as a precautionary measure while the Sheriff’s officers arrived and investigated.
The Sheriff’s Office learned that a visitor attending an end of the year ceremony at the school had a weapon. Louisiana prohibits any person from carrying a firearm, openly or concealed, on school property, at a school-sponsored function, or in a firearm-free zone, which includes a school campus, an area within 1,000 feet of a school campus, and inside a school bus.
Sheriff’s Office officials verified that there was never any threat to students, staff, or visitors. Lockdown was lifted at 1:49 p.m.
