LAPLACE — St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Orlando Nicholas has been named Officer of the First Quarter for his outstanding job performance during the Krewe of Dage Parade in LaPlace. Sheriff Mike Tregre, left, and Kemuel Farlough of Pelican Car Wash, sponsor of the Officer of the First Quarter, recognized Deputy Nicholas during a staff meeting this afternoon at the Lloyd B. Johnson Training Center in LaPlace.
Working the parade, Dpy. Nicholas was stationed on Carrollwood Drive near Madewood Drive. Dpy. Nicholas spotted a subject who appeared to have a firearm concealed in his waistband. Without delay he quickly wrapped the subject up, keeping his hands from being able to grab the gun. He verbally informed surrounding officers of the weapon and it was quickly secured without incident.
The subject was removed from the route and transported to Corrections.
“All of this was done without much of a spectacle and alarm to the public,” said Captain Charles Wale, Training Division Commander. “His diligence in looking for the warning signs of a concealed weapon paid off and a potential threat was able to be removed from the route before anyone could get hurt.”
