The St. Charles Catholic recently completed the 2022-23 boys basketball season after making it to the second round of playoff action.

Ranked No. 7, the Comets earned a bye week during the first round. During the second week, the team hosted No. 10 Catholic from New Iberia in the Division III Select.

The final score was SCC 25, Catholic N.I. 28.

Though the team would have liked to progress further in the competition, it saw several achievements during the season.

“I believe it was our team staying the course and handling adversity well,” Coach Zach Weber said. “We only lost back-to-back games twice this season. Our team never got too high, and we never got too low, which shows the leadership and maturity this team had. I believe this was a huge part of what led to a successful 20-8 season.”

Weber said the playoff result was not what anyone wanted, but it was amazing to see the excitement in the Comet community.

“Our fans packed our gym and gave our players a phenomenal atmosphere to play in,” he added. “It was something that we haven’t seen in years.”

SCC played an aggressive and tough defensive style.

According to Weber, this style led to a lot of the team’s offensive success because the Comets averaged 11 steals per game.

“Our team ended the season giving up 37 points per game,” he said. “We know playing the way we do defensively will always give us a chance in many games.”

As the Comets conclude the season, five seniors see the end of their high school careers: Skyler Smith, Ben Brignac, Samare Scott, Davon Stirgus and Brady Burns.

“Our amazing seniors are team-first guys, who never complained no matter their roles,” Weber said.

“When we took over this program two years ago, these five seniors bought in right away and saw the vision we had. I’m happy to say all five of them had a huge part of our success.”

Davon Stirgus earned 1st Team All District. The senior was a starter the last four years and was able to achieve a personal goal this season of reaching 1,000 career points at St Charles.

Burns, sophomore Kenneth Hall and freshman Austin Catalano all earned All District Honorable Mention.

“To have earned a top-8 seed, win 20 games and host a playoff game in year two of a program is not easy, but it just shows the type of kids we have here at St Charles Catholic,” Weber said. “They Love to be challenged.”

In looking forward, the coach stated, “We have started to create a standard here, and now it’s time to uphold that standard and work harder this summer and into next season to raise that standard.”

The Comets must replace 48 percent of the scoring moving into next season, “so I look forward to our summer to see which guys will compete and rise to the challenge. There is a lot of work to be done, but I know this group will be excited to get back to work,” Weber said.
