Tasty & good-for-the-heart recipe events coming to St. John Libraries

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH – During American Heart Month, Rinalda Rocquin, area nutrition agent for the LSU AgCenter will be demonstrating how to prepare tasty and Good-for-the-Heart Healthy Recipes at the St. John Parish Libraries. Samples and recipes will be available.
Rinalda Rocquin, area nutrition agent, is excited about the opportunity for community members to discover healthy recipes. “This event is designed for people to improve their health and discover easy ways to be heart healthy,” Rinalda said. “We all need a little help from friends when it comes to healthy living, and these events let us come together and support while learning and having fun.”
Come enjoy the free classes being sponsored by The St. John Libraries:
Roland Borne Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) at 10 a.m. on February 14
Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) at 1 p.m. on February 14
Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) at 1 p.m. on February 16
“I’m looking forward to discovering heart-healthy recipes together,” said Rinalda.
Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the United States, claiming the lives of more than 600,000 people each year. A healthy diet that is low in sodium and saturated fat is one key to heart disease prevention.
A heart-healthy diet recommends:
- Eating vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
- Eating fish, poultry, beans, nuts, vegetable oils, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products.
- Limiting foods that are high in saturated fat and sodium.
- Limiting sweet foods.
