LAPLACE — The St. Charles Catholic Comets basketball team moved to 15-5 on the season after a big 55-52 win over a solid Phoenix team that has a tradition of winning basketball. Phoenix has been in the state semifinals in their division for the past two years, and St. Charles Catholic coach Zach Weber knew the Comets had a challenge ahead of them.

“We knew going in that they had a very good player in #1 who is committed to play at UNO and also a team who would crash the offensive boards extremely hard,” Weber said. “We didn’t do a good enough job in the first half making things hard for #1, and we didn’t rebound well enough. I think after halftime adjustments, we did a very good job of executing that plan, making them earn every point they got in the second half. Credit goes to our players!”

The Comets trailed 28-19 at the half. However, the Comets opened the second half with an 8-2 run, including eight straight points from Austin Catalano. The Comets went on to score 18 points in the third and fourth quarters. Davon Stirgus and Brady Burns hit big three-point shots down the stretch that gave the Comets a lead in the third and fourth quarter. Reshawn Hilaire did a phenomenal job defensively to help the Comets keep the lead.

“I am very proud of our team for the grit they showed after being down by nine at half. We could have hung our heads, but our guys didn’t and chipped away right from the beginning of the third quarter and found a way to win in a very great atmosphere at home,” Weber said. “Thank you to our fans for coming out and giving our kids a playoff type atmosphere.”

The Comets will face Thomas Jefferson tonight at 6:30 p.m. Next up is a game against Lutcher at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
