Missing man’s body discovered in St. James Parish

CONVENT — On January 28, 2023, at 8:18am, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from Wildlife and Fisheries that an agent discovered the body of a black male on a sugarcane field road in Convent. After deputies arrived on scene, it was discovered that the male subject was shot multiple times at the location where his body was discovered.
On January 30, 2023, detectives were able to confirm that the deceased male subject is the same subject reported missing on January 25, 2023, in Ascension Parish. The victim is Robert Lee Hampton, 26 years old. Robert resided in Bay City, Texas, and had family residing in Ascension Parish.
Since the discovery of Robert’s body, St. James Sheriff’s Office has been working with Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office in this investigation. Robert was reported missing by family members in Ascension Parish on January 25, 2023. Detectives were advised that the last time anyone saw or spoke to Robert was on January 19, 2023. Robert’s vehicle, a black 4-door Dodge Charger was located on January 19, 2023, burned in Ascension Parish.
Anyone with any information on the murder of Robert Lee Hampton is asked to contact St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office at 225-562-2200, or submit a tip anonymously to Crime Stoppers GNO. Crime Stoppers GNO will offer a cash award up to $2500 for tips that lead to an arrest and indictment. Additionally Crime Stoppers GNO will offer a cash award of $1000 that leads to the recovery of this gun used in this homicide or any gun used in a crime.
