St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin, Jr. announced that 2022 property taxes were mailed on October 18, 2022. To view and pay online, go to www.stjamessheriff.com, scroll to the bottom and click online tax payments. These taxes help fund all aspects of public service in the parish such as roads, drainage, levees, law enforcement, juvenile housing, fire departments, hospitals, ambulance services, schools and recreation.
All tax payments are due by December 31, 2022, and delinquent taxes accrue interest of 1% per month until paid per state law.
In addition to paying online, payments can also be made over the phone by calling 225-562-2214 or 225-562-2501 or mailed using the envelope provided. Check, money order or cash will be accepted at the Sheriff’s Office’s Convent Courthouse location, 5800 La Highway 44, Convent or at the Sheriff’s Office Substation’s Vacherie location, 2631 Highway 20, Vacherie from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you pay your taxes by credit card, the credit card company will charge a convenience fee for those payments. The convenience fee is a minimum of $3.95 or 2.45% of the balance due. Partial payments cannot be paid with a credit card but the final payment can.
For those unable to pay in full by December 31, 2022, partial payments can be made at our Convent or Vacherie offices or by mailing directly to the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office, P. O. Box 83, Convent, LA 70723. The remaining unpaid amount is still subject to the 1% monthly penalty and must be paid in full by the tax sale date of June 7, 2023.
Property owners who do not receive a tax notice in the mail are still responsible for the payment of taxes. In some cases, tax bills may be sent to the previous property owner or might be lost in the mail. Additionally, anyone with a mortgage should check with their mortgage company before submitting payment as property taxes are sometimes paid through escrow.
Any unpaid property taxes are subject to tax sale and additional fees and penalties. For more information on this and other details about your tax notice, go to www.stjamessheriff.com, scroll down to online tax payments and then search for your property. Questions regarding the property assessment or property ownership should be directed to the St. James Parish Assessor’s Office at 225-562-2254.
In observance of the holidays, offices will be closed on Friday, December 30, 2022 and Monday, January 2, 2023.
