Marathon Update: One injury reported after explosion

LAPLACE — One contract worker has sustained an injury and is being evaluated at a local healthcare facility as a precaution following an explosion at Marathon Petroleum’s Garyville refinery, according to an updated statement from the company.
Marathon Petroleum responded to a fire at its Garyville refinery that began at approximately 9:30 a.m. The fire has been controlled, and all employees and contract workers have been accounted for.
According to Marathon’s most recent statement at 11:30 a.m., “The safety of responders, employees, contractors, and the community are our top priority.”
Air monitoring has been deployed in the community, and local emergency responders have been notified. The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that the intersection of West Airline Highway and Marathon Avenue in Garyville has reopened to motorists.
Around 9:30 a.m., St. John Parish residents reported hearing a “loud boom” near the Marathon plant. On social media, some individuals reported hearing the boom as far away as Destrehan and Ponchatoula.
