Port Sulphur – On February 10, 2022, shortly after 9:30 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a single vehicle crash on LA 23 (Belle Chasse Highway) near milepost 41.7 in Point Celeste. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 30-year-old Derrick Ray Poole of Georgetown.
The initial investigation revealed that Poole was driving south on LA 23 in a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado when it traveled off the roadway to the left and entered the center median. The Chevrolet then re-entered the roadway before overturning multiple times.
Poole, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Impairment is unknown and toxicology samples will be submitted for analysis as a part of the ongoing investigation.
Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a seatbelt greatly reduces the chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. Having a plan and making safe decisions could be the difference for tomorrow.
