LAPLACE — A new pastor, a new principal, and a new assistant principal will kick off the year at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Elementary School.
The new pastor, Fr. Cyril Buyeera, welcomes all to his school’s mission to bring faith, academic excellence, and service to our community. The new principal, Douglas Triche, says, “I want to help our community grow and get better every day, one student at a time.” The new Assistant Principal, Addie Melancon, will build on AOL School’s legacy of high academic standards and rigor in a safe environment for students to achieve the highest level of academic success.
“We are ONE in CHRIST: Trust – Grow – Bloom” is AOL School’s rallying cry for the 2021-2022 school year. Through trust in God, students will grow spiritually, scholastically and socially responsible to reach their true calling in life.
For 22 years, Fr. Cyril Buyeera has served as a priest. He started his priesthood in Uganda. For the past nine years, he has served as Parochial Vicar St. Maria Goretti Parish in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Fr. Cyril is known for his inviting and endearing personality with a gift for helping others to grow in their spiritual life.
In the Louisiana Superdome, on September 12, 1987, Triche shook the hand of the Pope who would become known at St. John Paul the Great. St. John Paul has been an important source of Triche’s inspiration as a lifetime educator of 40 years. He served for 12 years as the academic Assistant Principal at St. Charles Catholic High and then did the last three years as the Principal of Pope John Paul II High School. Triche has been called upon as a national speaker for developing Catholic identity in schools. He is also known for raising academic standards in the schools he has served.
For the past 13 years, Addie Melancon has been the beloved second-grade teacher at Ascension of our Lord. She completed her Masters in Educational Leadership at Southeastern University this past May and accepted the appointment to become AOL’s Assistant Principal over academics and discipline. Melancon will bring her leadership and enthusiastic dedication to help AOL School to grow in scholastic achievement.
Returning to AOL School as a member of the administrative team is the school counselor, Christine Escobar. With 12 years in education, Escobar has served the last eight years as the counselor and has assisted the Principal in the administrative duties. The school parents and students have come to rely on her wise guidance and recommendations. She will also help coordinate campus life activities.
