Browning: Holiday Cookbook recipes share special family stories
Published 12:00 am Saturday, October 26, 2019
A childhood memory that many have is cooking with our mom or something special that grandma would make. My grandmother lived on a mountain in West Virginia and had apple trees in her yard. She would always make fried apples and biscuits when we came to visit.
Mom was Italian and made spaghetti sauce from scratch and homemade bread. She would fry some of the dough to make pizelles, which is basically a doughnut with sugar, butter and cinnamon. Dad worked as a chemist and says cooking is nothing but chemistry and he makes up his own healthy recipes. My adult daughters and I share a history of cooking and baking together, though more so when they were younger. When my youngest, Diane, was about 3, we were baking cookies, when flour was spilled onto the floor. She entertained herself by making “snow” angels. Sara, my oldest, has been cooking to please people for years. It is her way of showing that she cares.
L’OBSERVATEUR is getting ready to publish its annual holiday cookbook. We are looking for recipes to include. This publication is printed on high quality, glossy paper and is wonderful way to preserve and share favorite recipes. All recipes used will include the name of the person submitting it. Please feel free to include a story or memory of the recipe.
The cookbook is scheduled to be in the paper on Nov. 23, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The submission deadline is Nov. 1.
The cookbooks are a very nice keepsake to pass along those special memories.
