RESERVE — Rico Gathers is still pursuing his NFL dream.
It was announced on Sunday that the Cleveland Browns have signed the 6-foot-6, 281-pound Gathers as a tight end.
Now in his third season out of Baylor, where he was a standout basketball player, Gathers has three receptions for 45 yards in 15 game appearances with four starts. He was originally a 6th round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2016. He was recently waived by Dallas and went unclaimed.
Until 2016, the last time Gathers played football was in middle school. The Reserve native was an All-State basketball player at Riverside Academy, where his team won state championships in his sophomore and junior seasons. He was Louisiana’s Mr. Basketball and the Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year in 2011.
