LAPLACE — A teenager is in jail, charged with shooting and killing a 27-year-old LaPlace man.
The 16-year-old male suspect from Convent was arrested Monday following a shooting that claimed the life of Malcolm Johnson.
The juvenile is charged with second degree murder.
The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office began working the case after reports of several gunshots led deputies to respond to the 2500 block of Williamsburg Drive in LaPlace at approximately 12:30 a.m. Monday.
Officers were told an altercation at the corner of Williamsburg and Plymouth streets between several individuals took place, resulting in multiple shots fired.
Shortly after, officers responded to Ochsner Medical Complex in LaPlace after a vehicle crashed into a telephone pole near the facility with a passenger suffering from a gunshot wound.
Upon arrival, officers observed medical personnel treating an unknown male, later identified as Johnson, who was lying on the ground.
Authorities said Johnson succumbed to his injuries shortly after, noting he had been shot on the left side of his body.
Based on investigation, detectives developed a juvenile as a suspect and obtained a judicial warrant for his arrest.
The juvenile turned himself in later Monday, and police said a motive for the shooting is unknown.
The juvenile is being held at the Sherman Walker Correctional Facility.
