EDGARD — After a week off, West St. John High (8-2) is back in game mode as the Rams prepare to host the East Iberville High Tigers at 7 p.m. Friday in Edgard.
As the No. 1 seed in the Class 1A state playoffs, WSJH was able to take last week off while the coaches watched East Iberville top Delhi, 46-38, in the first round of the playoffs.
The Tigers (6-5) feature a wing-t offense, which scored a season high in points last week.
“We don’t take anyone lightly,” Rams coach Brandon Walters said. “We were able to get out there, see them play against Delhi and see some things that we haven’t seen before. We are going to continue to work. We know we are going to get everybody’s best and we have to go out there prepared to fight for four quarters.”
Walters said he kept a routine schedule last week during the bye with slightly shorter practices. That effort intensifies this week.
“I haven’t had too many concerns about (our players) being tight and playing,” Walters said.
“This is new to some of our younger guys, but we have a good group of seniors and upperclassmen who have been through this since eighth grade. They are used to playing in the playoffs and going through this process.”
Walters said the Rams’ chief concern is staying focused and hungry while remaining disciplined.
“I’m never satisfied, but I do believe we are getting the kids’ best because we don’t settle for anything less,” Walters said. “If it doesn’t look good, we continue to push. The task at hand is to be the best we can by giving a good show and making it hard for everybody else.”
