Keller: Sin sacrifices future for pleasures of the moment

This past weekend, I was asked to do a family intervention with a young couple whom I had never met before. They were separated, and I was told by the wife that it was because of her husband’s drug habit.

We met for lunch and agreed to be honest with each other. I promised not to preach, but to only share my personal experience with alcohol and what God had done in my life.

I told them of God’s ministry of Get High on Life that I’ve been blessed to be a part of. I also shared some of the success and also the many failures of the young drug users I’ve dealt with.

The young man used alcohol (a legal drug), but was addicted to marijuana. Like most marijuana users, he didn’t seem to consider that a serious drug. I told him that most people don’t, but it opens the door to more dangerous drugs.

During our conversation, I spoke of the present epidemic of heroin use and shared that every person I’ve counseled with who was addicted to heroin, all used marijuana as their first introduction to getting addicted.

I asked him if he thought drug addiction was a disease.

He said, “Definitely!”

I smiled and said that I was at a 12-step program when I first heard that I had a disease and was excited! That meant I was sick and getting drunk wasn’t my fault. (My wife certainly didn’t believe that and I’m glad she didn’t!)

Today, I agree it’s a spiritual sickness. In Galatians 5:21, the Bible refers to envy, murder, drunkenness, etc., as sin, which is the lust of the flesh.

I closed our meeting with reference to a sermon I recently heard about the consequences of sin.

In other words, sacrificing your future for the pleasures of the moment.
