Michel: Miscommunication starts early, impacts everyone

I have the privilege (and I’m not being sarcastic) of driving my granddaughter Adeline to school each day. I get to drag her out of bed, dress her and encourage her to eat breakfast.

Then, when she is finally fully awake, I calm her down and tell her that we will not be late and she will get to her kindergarten classroom in time to color. (This happens every single school day.)

One recent morning, Adeline insisted that there would be a nacho sale at school.

“No, Addi, you bought nachos yesterday,” I explained. “There will be no nachos today.”

“Yes, there will. My mama said another day of nachos for a dollar.”

“No, there won’t. Check your folder. There’s no money for nachos because there’s no sale today.”

This conversation was repeated over and over until I called her mom. As soon as Lauren answered the phone, Adeline said, “Didn’t you tell me it was another day of nachos?”

Lauren laughed. “No! I said, ‘Another day, another dollar.’ That just means I have to go to work.”

“Well you should say things better,” Adeline said.

Whether you’re 5 or 105, disappointments and misunderstandings are often tough to handle.

Sometimes it’s prayers that we feel have gone unanswered or things we thought God said that turned out differently. We’ve been told that when one door closes, another will open, but as I’ve often heard, “It’s tough in the hallway.”

I often turn to Romans 8:28 when I need to be reminded of God’s sovereign plan even when my plans fail. “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.”
