GIVING BACK: LSU tickets, dart tourney fundraiser hit cancer bull’s-eye

LAPLACE — It can be tough to get back on your feet after a disaster.
No one knows that better than Airline Pub owner Emma Roccaforte.
A year ago this month, Roccaforte was getting excited about an upcoming fundraiser to help Perry’s Posse.
The organization, named in memory Lawrence “Perry” Levet, a Garyville native who died in 2014 at the age of 45 from cancer, serves as a support group for dozens of River Parishes cancer patients and holds various fundraisers throughout the year.
The Posse had planned an exciting evening of food, music and darts on a Friday night at Airline Pub in LaPlace last year.
Then it started to rain.
Then it didn’t stop.
Roccaforte’s St. Amant home was one of hundreds that flooded last August, taking on three feet of water.
“It was pretty rough,” she said.
Although her LaPlace business was unscathed, she was forced to cancel the dart tournament.
Now it’s a year later and Roccaforte is still adding some finishing touches to her house, but she is ready to reschedule the night for Perry’s Posse.
The Perry’s Posse Dart Tournament “Redo” will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Airline Pub, 221 E. Airline Highway in LaPlace.
Sign up for the blind draw double tournament begins at 6 p.m. The cost is $20 per person, half of which will go to the winning pot and half to the Posse, which helps local cancer patients with emotional and sometimes financial support.
There also will be music by “3rd Street,” food, a 50/50 raffle and drink specials.
The group also will use the occasion to draw the winning tickets for Perry’s Posse’s big raffle. The first prize is a set of LSU season tickets; second prize is a vintage bench donated by Joann Dean Weber. Raffle tickets are still available for $10 per chance at Cricket’s Corner Bar, 234 Museum St. in Garyville, and will be available for purchase until the drawing.
Roccaforte said, despite her own troubles, she is willing to do what she can to help others.
“I’m always happy to help out because it’s a worthy cause,” Roccaforte said. “Everybody is affected by cancer, especially in the River Parishes.”
Like thousands of residents and business owners affected by the 2016 flood, the Garyville native has struggled to put her house back together.
She said she is back home, but not everything is back to normal. “They’re just now digging the septic tank,” she said.
Those interested in donating can mail Perry’s Posse at P.O. Box 2053, Garyville, La., 70051.
