LAPLACE — A BMW valued at nearly $90,000 stolen from Mississippi and a Suzuki motorcycle stolen from Orleans Parish were part of a showroom of illegal items authorities confiscated last week during a LaPlace raid.
Cornell Anderson, 39, is facing half a dozen charges following his May 4 arrest, which coincided with a raid on his home.
The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division was contacted by McClendon Security of Jackson, Miss., in reference to a 2017 BMW 740I sedan valued at $87,995 that was stolen from Herrin-Gear BMW of Jackson, Miss.
McClendon told local authorities the vehicle was equipped with GPS tracking that was signaling at a South Golfview Drive residence in LaPlace.
Special Operations Division members began surveillance May 4 of the residence, which had two garage doors. With a search warrant, detectives located the stolen BMW 740I parked inside the garage and recovered a loaded stolen Kel-Tec 9 mm handgun, a stolen 2007 Suzuki motorcycle, approximately 13.8 grams of marijuana, two digital scales and a metal grinder.
Anderson was arrested for two counts of possession of stolen property, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by convicted felon, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He posted a $56,500 bond and was released May 5.
Capt. Tanner Mangano said authorities don’t know if the suspect planned on selling the stolen vehicles.
“I was inside of Anderson’s garage, and we believe an attempt was made to locate and disarm the GPS tracking system in the (BMW),” Mangano said, adding the operations division is assisting in the recovery and apprehension of suspects in St. John Parish.
Mangano said the recovered handgun, vehicles and drugs indicate other criminal activity may be taking place, adding the local investigation is on-going.
