Severe thunderstorm watch extends to 4 p.m. today

LAPLACE — The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 4 p.m. Friday  for all parishes in Southeast Louisiana with the main threat being damaging winds, possibly in excess of 60 mph and heavy rainfall.
Residents are asked to secure garbage cans and any yard debris as best as they can and pick up tree branches to avoid entering the drainage system during the weather event.
Residents should call 9-1-1 to report drainage, sewage or flooding problems IMMEDIATELY. Please use caution when venturing outdoors or operating vehicles in heavy rainfall and refrain from driving through ponding water.
Crews are out monitoring and responding to any issues that may arise with drainage and Utility systems.
St. John Parish officials are monitoring weather conditions and have been in contact with the National Weather Service to receive the latest weather forecasts.
