Keller: An open letter to the many River Region graduates

Congratulations to all graduates!
I realize that some of you have worked hard and did the very best that you could. I also know that many of you just did enough to get by; your only concern was getting out of school.
To those who received awards for their outstanding achievements — your recognition at this time is well deserved.
My message to all the graduating classes of 2017 is to remember that mediocrity is the enemy of greatness.
To everyone who received a diploma, graduation is not the end, but the beginning of a new life.
It’s time to make some important decisions. If you’re a high school graduate and have decided to further your education, you must decide which college you will attend and in what field you want to specialize.
To the young people who will enter the workforce, you must decide if you just want a job or an opportunity to learn a trade and enjoy life while making a living.
Let me remind you that we live in a free country, where success is guaranteed if you are willing to pay the price.
May I suggest that you accept your new responsibility with enthusiasm and a desire to be the person God created you to be.
Always be reminded that one thing which can destroy your ambition and will to achieve is the abuse of illegal drugs and alcohol.
We often hear the word “success.”
What actually is success?
The best definition that I’ve ever heard is: Being in God’s Will for your life. The key to success is very simple — put God first in your life, your family second and your job or career, third.
My challenge to all the graduates is to make this world a better place because of your presence.
Don’t be overwhelmed with all of today’s problems. Be determined to make a mark as you journey through this life. Many people easily become discouraged and do nothing.
Don’t fall into that category.
Be different. Dare to dream and then work to make your dreams come true. Every person was created to do great things for the glory of God.
We all have a desire to be great, but most people forget that the secret to greatness is humility. Be humble as you travel this life and look for opportunities to be of service.
Sounds like a tough challenge?
You bet. Anyone who achieves greatness is usually faced with many obstacles.
Finally, graduates, may your lives be filled with much joy, plenty of love and a peace (regardless of the situation), that only God can give.
Have a great, productive life!
