LUTCHER — St. James Parish Hospital is hosting Safe Sitter courses this summer for children 11 to 13.

The medically accurate course has trained more than 600,000 students and is offered locally as a two-day event. Options for 2017 include June 15-16 or June 22-23.

St. James Parish Hospital’s Safe Sitter courses are held in the Community Education Room (located in the Medical Plaza) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second day of the course concludes with a presentation to parents.

The Safe Sitter course teaches how, why and where injuries are most likely to happen so they can be prevented.

The course provides hands-on practice in lifesaving techniques to students who will be home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting so they are equipped with the skills and confidence to act in an emergency.

Students are taught basic first aid, infant and child choking rescue and CPR. Students also learn how a child’s age affects how to care for them, how to prevent problem behavior and how to run their own babysitting business.

Students who graduate from a Safe Sitter course receive a completion card demonstrating they passed the course.

The cost of the course is $50 due the first day of the class.
