Keller: Don’t have selfishness define us

I think most Americans would say that we have become more selfish than any other generation.

The modern mindset for many Americans is “what’s in it for me?”

Being a taker instead of a giver is the attitude and motivation of many. Selfishness makes us obsessed with “what’s in it for me” and is never concerned about others less fortunate than ourselves who may need our help.

If the secret to living is giving (and I’m not talking about money), many people miss the only way to an exciting, successful Christian life.

This past weekend, Jeanne and I decided to take in a high school baseball game in the Baton Rouge area in which our nephew had two grandsons playing.

We enjoyed the game even though the team we were pulling for lost.

The two boys are very good athletes and both will probably play on a major college team. They have an older brother now serving his country in the military.

After having three boys, their parents decided they wanted a girl.

A few years ago, they decided to go through the procedure of adopting a little girl from China. Within a year-and-a-half, they repeated the adopting procedure and went to China and brought home another little girl.

Being with the girls at the game, I realized how God has blessed them with such loving parents who are, undoubtedly, in God’s Will for their lives.

Keep in mind that a few years ago, China had a law, which permitted a couple to have only one child. Many who wanted a boy would kill the infant if it was a girl. I understand that law has been amended to permit more than one child.

As we drove home, I told Jeanne I know God loves everybody, but the parents of those boys and the little girls are special in God’s eyes and a testimony to other Christians.
