Ex-Ram Maya Trench setting Xavier records

NEW ORLEANS — Former West St. John High standout basketball player Maya Trench, who is now a freshman starter at Xavier University, was named to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference All-Defensive women’s basketball team last week.
Trench, a 5-foot-2 point guard from Edgard, is the first freshman, female or male, to be named to a GCAC All-Defensive team.
The conference picked its first All-Defensive teams in 2015-16.
Entering this week, Trench was leading the Gold Nuggets with 74 steals and 94 defensive rebounds in 32 games.
Among the milestones Trench reached this season:
• She led the team in games started, minutes per game, total rebounds, assists, steals and scoring average
• She is the first freshman to lead XULA in scoring, assists and steals
• She is the second player to lead XULA in scoring, assists and steals in the same season
• She has tied the XULA freshman record for assists in a season (Vashita Wells,1994-95) and is tied for ninth place on XULA’s all-time season list
• She is the second freshman to reach 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 50 steals
• She is 17th in NAIA Division I and second among freshmen, with 4.4 assists per game
• She is the third freshman to lead XULA in scoring and the first since 2000-01)
