Keller: Trouble in change is doing things differently

While attending a self-help program years ago, the moderator chose change as the topic.

It was stressed that the biggest problem with change is that you have to do something different.

Something I’ve heard many times since is, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results.”

The 12-step program’s second step states that “We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”

Change is a word we often hear, know what it means, but refuse to take the action necessary to solve the problem.

Sunday, the pastor spoke about change and the things we should consider doing if we are serious about changing any situation.

The three steps he suggested were:

1. Embrace an attitude of gratitude, being thankful for what you have.

2. Keep an attitude of simplicity.

I was reminded that I’m a simple person who goes through a lot of trouble complicating issues in my life. I’ll never forget attending a sales seminar in Memphis, Tenn., in 1958. The instructor was Joe Sparanzo of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. The session was great, but the thing I remember the most was Joe’s closing statement which was: “In selling, remember KISS, (Keep it Simple Stupid).” I wish I would have taken his advice throughout my life.

3. Every night review your day’s walk with Jesus.

The pastor closed with a statement by C.W Lewis: “All that is not eternal is eternally useless.”

That statement sums up what life should be about.
