Riverside hosts SCC rematch in final VB week

RESERVE — Last week, fans of the Riverside Academy and St. Charles Catholic volleyball teams put on their prettiest pink and filled the Lady Comets’ gym for the annual Pink Match to help raise breast cancer awareness.
The Lady Rebels won that game 25-20, 25-14, 15-25, 25-13.
This week the Comets travel to Reserve for the rematch.
Riverside Academy will host St. Charles Catholic Monday. The junior varsity match begins at 4:30 with the varsity to follow.
While pink may or may not be worn, Riverside will be celebrating Senior Night, honoring senior players Maddie Duhon and Toni Perrin.
That’s right. This Riverside team that is setting new records for wins and is on a path to finish with its highest power ranking in school history, has only two seniors.
Although they enter the week 29-3 and in the No. 3 spot in the Division III power rankings, Rebels coach Margot Frederick said this is no time for her team to get complacent.
“This is not the time to be resting on our laurels,” Frederick said. “We need to be the best version of ourselves.”
The Rebels completed their sweep of John Curtis Tuesday with a hard-fought 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22 win.
Sydney Joseph led with 23 kills, Briley Becker had 18 kills and Duhon had 27 digs.
However, Frederick said she saw signs of that “competitive loafing” Thursday in a 25-11, 25-8, 25-14 win over St. James.
“We did some things that aren’t characteristic of us,” she said. “We let some free balls hit the floor.”
Frederick and the Rebels will not be overlooking St. Charles Monday, nor Haynes Academy Tuesday. A pair of victories will clinch a district championship.
However, a win Thursday at St. Scholastica, the current No. 3 seed in Division II, would be a statement.
“I have to figure we’re not the favorite,” Frederick said. “I’d like to see us beat a team we’re not supposed to beat. That would be a signature win going into the playoffs.”
The volleyball brackets will be announced next weekend, with the first round of the playoffs set to begin Nov. 1.
Of course, that will all lead up to the annual State Tournament, which begins Nov. 10 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
After Monday’s match, St. Charles Catholic has only one remaining Thursday against Ascension Catholic. The Lady Comets enter the week 15-17.
The 2016 season was a struggle for the East St. John High team, which has not won a game. The Lady Wildcats close out with matches against Sci Academy Monday, St. Thomas Aquinas Tuesday and John Ehret Thursday.
Last week East St. John lost in four games to Destrehan, 24-26, 25-21, 12-25, 17-25.
“We played hard those first two matches,” coach Jarranisha Allen said. “As the matches went on, we lost our momentum.”
Chardae Berthelot finished the match with 17 kills and four digs. Jamiyah Haynes had 13 assists, four aces and four digs.
Troynisha Gerard had four kills and six aces.
Dorian Brown had three kills, nine assists and five aces.
West St. John High, under first year coach Dayna Nicholas, finished its limited schedule with a three-game loss to Covenant Christian last week.
The Lady Wildcats got their only victories in a four-game loss and a five-game loss to St. James.
Note: The Louisiana Southern Swing Volleyball Club will hold tryouts, assessments and orientation for its 10-under, 12-under, 13-under and 14-under teams from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 6, and for the 15-under, 16-under, 17-under and 18-under teams on Nov. 13 at East St. John High.
The cost is $30 for assessment and placement and $25 for club fees.
No checks will be accepted.
