RESERVE — Apparently, no one has kept many records for volleyball at Riverside Academy, but coach Margot Frederick is pretty sure this year’s team is breaking some.
Early this week Frederick was thrilled to see the latest power rankings showing the Lady Rebels as the No. 2 team in the state behind Pope John Paul II. That’s higher than perennial powerhouses Isidore Newman, Academy of the Sacred Heart, Northlake Christian and John Curtis.
“We’re not sure, but we think it’s the highest in school history,” Frederick said.
Heading into its own weekend tournament, Riverside Academy was 20-1 overall. The Lady Rebels got their toughest test of the season Thursday against Curtis. They had to fight hard to take a 5-game win, 23-25, 25-19, 25-10, 23-25, 15-13 win.
Sydney Joseph led with 28 kills, 10 digs and five aces. Briley Becker had 21 kills and 30 digs. Abby Bourgeois had 54 assists and 10 digs. Maddie Duhon had 15 digs.
Frederick said she had confidence going into the match. Her team has handled the early schedule the way she thought it would, building confidence along the way.
“Now we are kind of standing the test of time,” she said. “I knew (Curtis) had graduated a lot of people, so I kind of knew this would be an opening for us to beat them.”
Riverside won the Riverdale Tournament last weekend with victories over Lutheran (25-5, 25-10), Central Catholic (25-21, 25-11), Central Lafourche (25-22, 25-18) and Pontchatoula (25-16, 25-13). The Rebels defeated Central Catholic again in the final 27-25, 25-19 to take the title.
Becker finished tournament play with a total of 45 kills, 37 digs and 12 aces. Joseph had 69 kills, six blocks and 15 aces. Bourgeois had 125 assists and 15 aces. Duhon had 41 digs and Carli Hymel had 10 aces.
The Lady Rebels will face more tough challenges today as the team hosts its own tournament, with some of the top teams in the metro area coming to Reserve, including teams from Newman, Ursuline, Lakeshore, the Dunham School, Lusher, Central Lafourche and Morgan City.
Action begins today at 9:30 a.m. with the finals slated for 3:45 p.m.
St. Charles Catholic has been working hard, playing a total of 32 games in 13 matches between Sept. 17 and 26.
The Lady Comets also competed in the Riverdale Tournament last weekend, finishing 3-2 with wins over Warren Easton, Patrick Taylor and East Jefferson and losses to Destrehan and Pontchatoula.
Against Easton, Jori Bryant had six kills and one block and Grace Mohon had five kills, two aces and two digs. Against Patrick Taylor, Pylar Zeringue led with seven kills, three digs and an ace. Bryant had six kills and four blocks. Mohon had five kills and an ace. Mohon had seven kills and Zeringue had six against East Jefferson.
Bryant and Mohon had four kills against Destrehan. Bryant had five against Pontchatoula.
“We had some lower competition, so it was hard to play at our top level when the game was moving so slow,” Comets coach Meg Ericksen said. “But it was encouraging to see that, no matter the type of team we are playing, we are still giving it our all.”
The Comets then opened district play Monday with a hard-fought loss to Curtis, 19-25, 25-18, 25-17, 30-28.
Mohon had 14 kills, four aces and five digs in that match. Bryant had 10 kills and two blocks. Zeringue had five kills, two aces and seven digs. Caroline Julian had 16 digs and Jade Brady had 14 digs. Brooke St. Pierre had 34 assists and 14 digs.
“This was a tough game to lose,” Ericksen said. “We played the best I’ve seen yet and fought our hearts out.”
The Comets followed with a 25-6, 25-19, 25-16 win over St. James Thursday. Mohon had five kills and three aces. Bryant had four kills. Robbie Duhe had six aces.
Things haven’t gotten easier for East St. John, which opened District 6-I play with losses to Destrehan (25-14, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18), Hahnville (25-3, 25-19, 25-11) and H.L. Bourgeois (25-13, 25-14, 25-6). The Wildcats begin the second round of district Tuesday at Hahnville.
The re-building West St. John team lost Tuesday to Covenant Christian, 25-21, 25-11, 25-20. The Lady Rams, who are playing a very limited schedule, travel to Central Catholic Thursday.
