EDGARD — West St. John principal Claude Hill Jr. said he has known senior student-athletes Lamore Boudoin and Maya Trench since they were fourth graders together at West St. John Elementary School.
Even then, he said, the two were all about academics.
“They were that focused on academics even back then,” Hill said. “It was that important to them.”
Perhaps no one knew then that those little fourth graders would grow up to be great athletes once they got to high school.
To no one’s surprise, however, they remained stellar student athletes.
Boudoin and Trench were honored last week as members of the ISC Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s All-Academic Scholar Composite basketball teams. The program recognizes graduating seniors who have maintained a perfect 4.0 or above grade point average throughout all four years of high school.
Trench, a 5-foot-5 guard, was L’OBSERVATEUR’s All-St. John Parish Girls Player of the Year for 2015-16.
She led the parish in scoring, averaging 19.2 points and six assists to help the Lady Rams advance to a 20-8 finish and the District 12-2A title. She has signed to play for Xavier University.
Boudoin played running back on the football team, guard on the basketball team, infield on the baseball team and competed in the long jump, triple jump and relay runs on the track team.
The Rams just recently finished as state runner-up at the state track meet. Boudoin competed on the 4×200 meter relay team which finished sixth and the 4×100 meter relay team which finished second.
Boudoin was named to the composite basketball team, but he also made the composite football, baseball and track teams. He has never recorded a “B” in his entire high school career. He has an offer from Southern University to play football.
“They are two excellent kids,” Hill said. “Both of them have excelled as student athletes. It’s important that our students have role models like that.”
