LAPLACE — The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Southeast Louisiana including St. John the Baptist Parish until 6 p.m. Monday as a result of a strong storm system predicted to move through the area.
The safest place to be during a tornado is under a workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture. If a Tornado Warning is declared, residents should seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building or home in an interior hallway or room such as a closet.
Use blankets and pillows to cover your body and always stay away from windows. If in a mobile home or vehicle, evacuate them and get inside a substantial shelter as soon as possible.
Other threats associated with the system include heavy rainfall and strong winds. The chance of severe weather is expected to diminish by tomorrow. Please dial 911 in the event of an emergency.
Residents should also monitor weather stations for changes in the forecasts and for updates. To sign up for Parish emergency notifications, please visit the St. John website at sjbparish.com and click on “Stay Connected.”
