Keller: It doesn’t cost us anything to offer encouragement

As a Christian, our responsibility is to encourage others.

I try to do that with the people I counsel, but God has shown me I need to improve, especially with my family.

The definition for encourage is: to give courage, hope or confidence to; to cheer up.

Today, many people are living one day at a time with no hope. We are surrounded by people who need a word of encouragement.

It’s something we can do that doesn’t cost anything. Like a blood transfusion, it does wonders for the recipient and the donor.

In Ephesians 4:29, the Bible says: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

When you look for good in a person and express it, you give them something to live up to.

In other words, you motivate them to be better than they are.

The great thing about encouragement is that you don’t have to be rich, attractive, prominent or brilliant to give it, and it’s always welcomed and appreciated.

If the secret to living is giving, today encourage someone.

It has the power to change the negative course that someone may be on.

During the Lenten Season, many people will give up something.

It might be pleasing to God to give something away — encourage someone each day for the next 40 days.
