Keller: Election run without preparation
Published 12:06 am Saturday, January 16, 2016
Fifty-two years ago, January 11, 1964, to be exact, I was elected to represent St. John Parish in the State Legislature.
I was 29-years-old and married with three young children.
What prompted me to run for such a responsible position? Believe me; it was not after careful deliberation with wisdom from others. No, my decision was made in a barroom.
After a few drinks with small talk about the upcoming election and hearing me being critical, someone suggested that I should run. I said, “I think I will.”
When I got home and told Jeanne of my plan, she asked, “Why? You can’t win!”
I knew that, but being in the insurance business, I thought a campaign would get my name in front of people and the exposure would help me in business.
The incumbent at that time was Mr. D. Elmore Becnel, a 12-year member of the House, on the Budget Committee, and one of the most respected men in Baton Rouge.
He was a gentleman, a World War II veteran, a prominent attorney, and most of all, a respected and productive legislator.
The campaign was an exciting experience for me.
I met a lot of people, attended political rallies and knocked on every door in St. John Parish. I was so busy campaigning; I didn’t have time to put together a platform.
My slogan was “Your choice will be your voice.” My response to, “There is no substitute for experience” was, “Yes there is — youth and enthusiasm.” I was wrong.
When the election returns were announced, I had won the race. I was shocked, as most of St. John was. The next day, Mr. Becnel was among the first to call and congratulate me and offered any help that I might need.
I had been elected to represent the people in my parish. I sought and was elected to a position for which I wasn’t prepared.
The experience was great! I met many people and made some lifelong friends. The experience was good for me, but the reason for running was a good example that many people seek political jobs without being prepared.
Thanks for allowing me a chance to share something that’s been on my heart for a long time.
